Yo, Thumperites and Thumperettes:

Since 1952, I've owned 19 cars, 2 trucks, 5 motorcycles, and a homemade motorbike.(1951) I've always done my own tuneups, tinkering, and repairs. (I once bought a used transmission for $8 at a wrecking yard, which I installed in my 1942 Mercury, after I blew out 2nd gear during a drag race) My last few vehicles have been too complex for me to do engine work on, with their fuel injection and engine management computers, but my Savage carburetor has me puzzled: I know that the throttle-controlled Butterfly Valve varies the amount of air entering the engine, and that this also determines how much fuel is metered into the mixture from the Main Jet. What I don't understand is the function of the Diaphragm Assembly which contains the needle with its springs and the White Spacer! Can somebody enlighten me?

Thanks...
HAL
